This place is not a good choice if you want a pleasant experience. From the start they were texting me a lot about my arrival time (which I honestly couldn't give them a precise answer to), then they offered to switch my dates around (as I was staying at another place before) and then refused to change the dates after all (although they did have rooms available). They labeled me as a no show and blocked me on WhatsApp and Booking.com, so I was charged for this misunderstanding and lack of willingness to negotiate. I would not recommend anyone to stay here, as I was also charged for the second night even though I was not there. It is best to always pay through Booking.com or other such websites and not at the property, as it can be really difficult to prove anything when dealing with hostels that are not client-oriented or trustworthy (as the staff said one thing on the phone, but then did something else).
My stay at the Diagonal House Hostel in Barcelona was not a great experience. Upon my arrival, I was not provided with a description of the house. I had to go searching all around to find the bathroom, kitchen, and living room. The beds were dirty and uncomfortable, as captured in the photo on my arm. The showers lacked hot water and had a sewer smell. I would unfortunately not recommend this place, only giving it two stars for the location.
This place is far from ideal for visitors. Upon spending two nights, in two separate beds, I found myself being bitten by bed bugs. It was the beginning of an unbearable, sleepless night. On top of that, when I informed the manager of the issue I was disregarded and even blocked from phone contact. To make matters worse, the manager left a false statement on a public review, claiming there were mosquitoes in the room. When you take a look at my provided evidence and read other reviews, you can guarantee the fact that this was not true. My back was pictured in the hostel bathroom and it is clear that there have been no further efforts to fix the problem. Needless to say, my summer vacation plans were ruined, as I spent four weeks in Europe with red marks all over my body. Therefore, I strongly recommend staying elsewhere, where you do not have to go through such an unpleasant experience.
This place is amazing! ? From its stunning entryway reminiscent of a temple (sometimes with a doorman!) to its old-time elevator with mechanical relays and even a handy ATM machine outside, you can't ask for more convenience. ? Plus, with uptown stores down the avenue and hip locales in the opposite direction, there's never a dull moment. ? And that's before you even explore the Gaudi-inspired architecture or hop onboard a trolley to the ocean! ? All in all, a truly remarkable spot. ? ? ? ?
AVOID THIS PLACE AT ALL COSTS!!! My fiancé and I, arrived late due to our delayed travel into the city. We tried to get in as soon as possible but unfortunately our phones were on a mere 1-2% each so were unable to keep the hostel alerted every step of the way. We arrived at the hostel late around 10:45pm (to which we understand now is a late check in time). We are frequent travelers and have stayed in hostels all over the world to which, I’ve never experienced an issue so humiliating and beyond unbelievable like this. When we arrived, we knocked on the door of the hostel to which we were greeted by a young-20-30 something woman who claimed she worked there. She said she was unable to unlock the doors and let us into the rooms because her “boss” was home with a pregnant wife and could not be bothered. We understood immediately that they did not want to let us into the rooms that we paid for, but I asked her if it was possible that we charge our phones because we had just gotten into the city and we’re on our last remaining percentage and didn’t want to be stuck homeless in the middle of the night sleeping on the streets. She insisted that we would not be able to enter or charge our phones. My fiancé and I begged her to tell us where we can go to find a place to stay (mind you this was Sunday evening when most places were closed) and she said she would ultimately tell us. My fiancé and I do not speak Spanish well and I assume she did not speak English well because after I asked her one more time if she can please let us charge our phones then she slammed the small window stating we were giving her an attitude. My fiancé and I were completely confused and thrown off because that’s when an older man approached the window screamed at us to leave then they slammed the door. My fiancé knocked at the door because we were so confused what was happening and genuinely needed help and that’s when the older man (who only spoke Spanish) opened the door and lunged at my fiancé as if he was going to hit him in the face. They both were screaming at us in Spanish and we - who didn’t understand were begging them to let us charge our phones so we can find another place to stay, could leave. That’s when the old man slammed my fiancé’s foot in the door, and his shoe was stuck completely so he couldn’t move. We then banged on the door screaming for them to open the door because he was now literally caught in the door and all we wanted to do was leave. But we couldn’t. They refused to open the door after 20minutes until another guest arrived and entered the hostel who then released his foot. Finally, the police arrived and though while they tried to sympathize with us, they said because the old man didn’t actually hit my fiancé in the face there was nothing they could actually do to him. They suggested us to go to the local police office to file a proper report. We ultimately left the property because we obviously didn’t feel comfortable staying or fighting to stay at a place in which an old man who worked there just tried to assault another guest desperate to charge their phones. This was the absolute worst experience I’ve ever had in my life and I can’t believe this business lacks the empathy to deal with paying guests. The worst part about it was, we were booked and paid for 2 nights. If we arrived too late to check in for one night, we should’ve been able to check in for the following day. I wrote up a report to discuss the matter with the company direct and instead of attempting to alleviate the situation, they immediately blocked my number. I contact Booking.com to refute the charge because they refused to let us in and they sided with us but ultimately said it was up to the business to release the refund and they don’t want to. DO NOT STAY HERE. There are much better options in this city!!! They are scams artists and wildly unprofessional. It’s not worth the hassle..
