Between Art Nouveau and refined modernity

At 100 meters from las Ramblas and the Liceu Theater, the hotel España surprises for its perfect architectural symbiosis between the essence of this Art Nouveau building and the chic, modern and fabulous decoration. A design brought to its highest details, with superb and comfortable rooms. Hard to resist when you know that a sunny terrace waits you at the roof of the hotel and that the renowned Chef Martin Berasategui is at the commands of the Fonda España restaurant.

This accommodation is situated near Las Ramblas. Don't be fooled by the street it is on; it is a beautifully preserved old hotel in the heart of the area. We were welcomed with a smooth check-in process and the staff were very accommodating and friendly. Despite arriving earlier than expected, our room was ready. It was fairly spacious, very clean, comfortable and quiet. One evening, we took advantage of the rooftop area for snacks and drinks and were delighted by the quality and service. Despite a heatwave, our room remained comfortable. The only downside was that some of the floor tiles in the bathroom needed to be re-grouted. We stayed at this hotel for three nights and thoroughly enjoyed the entertainment and meals in the area, not to mention that we felt safe. Check-out went without a hitch and we would definitely come back again.

This hotel is in an ideal location for anyone looking to explore the city! The rooms are comfortable and have a romantic balcony, perfect for taking in the European atmosphere. The bathrooms are great, and while the 19E breakfast can be a bit expensive, the good news is that coffee is free. Plus, it's walking distance to all the attractions - what more could you ask for? There's even a tiny pool on the roof with a bar - a great bonus!

Upon our arrival we were warmly welcomed by the staff at reception. Our check-in was completed with efficiency and we were gifted a complimentary drink in the bar with views of the city. We were also provided with a wifi password, maps and suggestions of places to eat. Our room was immaculate and stocked with cosy robes and slippers. There was even coffee and cold drinks in the fridge. We were delighted with our stay here and recommend it highly.

My friend and I had originally booked to stay here in May 2020, and then re-booked for May 2021, neither of those trips ever happened due to Covid and then a travel agent friend tried to persuade us to book a different hotel, but we went with our gut and booked this one, and were not disappointed. We stayed for five nights at the beginning of June 2023, and could not fault it at all, I really wonder whether some of the recent reviewers of the hotel actually stayed at the same place as us! We arrived to an incredibly friendly welcome, check-in was quick and simple and we were given maps, the wifi code, a voucher for a free cocktail and were escorted up to our room which was a good size and was very well appointed, with bath robes, slippers, TV, Nespresso coffee machine, and minibar with water and juice. We had twin beds which were comfortable with plenty of pillows, and the lovely bathroom had a large bath with fantastic overhead shower, a huge double wash basin, and the crowning glory of some gorgeous Rituals toiletries. The room was serviced daily with fresh bedding and towels, and coffee pods and mini bar replenished at no extra cost. A previous reviewer mentions the hotel is next to a missionary and there are tramps hanging around. This was news to me. We did not see anything like this at all. Our room was on the 2nd floor, at the front, overlooking the street and we thought the area was pretty quiet, no traffic as there are bollards at each end (our taxi driver had the code to lower them to get down to the hotel) and the only noise at night was chatter from passers by. Having said which, the hotel is next to the side entrance of the “Gran Teatre del Liceu” (one of Europe's leading opera houses) and although there was noise when people were queuing for events there, this was early in the evening not late at night so did not disturb us at all.

Part of the reason we booked the hotel was because it had a rooftop bar and pool. Yes, the pool is tiny, but after a day’s sightseeing you don’t want to be swimming lengths of an Olympic pool, you just want a quick dip to cool down and it was perfect for that and moreover, was clean and well kept. There are plenty of towels available, and plenty of comfortable seating, we spent a couple of wonderful hours up on the roof, it’s a real sun trap, enjoying a few cocktails. A previous reviewer said breakfast was awful - did they actually eat at this hotel or go elsewhere, because there was so much choice for breakfast, we didn’t know where to start, from fresh fruit, cheese and yogurts to a selection of breads and pastries, fresh juices, cereals, a good cooked selection and the biggest Nespresso machine I’ve ever seen which made the most wonderful coffee! The hotel itself is perfectly situated in a quiet street off La Rambla. There is a Metro Station right at the end of the street - Liceu - from where it is quick and easy to get to the rest of the city such as La Sagrada Familia or Parc Guell. Buses are also frequent and reliable from the same area and it’s a pleasant walk down to the marina area. We loved the open-air restaurants on La Rambla and were frequently to be found sitting there with a cocktail or something to eat, watching the world go by.

As I said, this trip was with a friend but I really want to return to Barcelona with my husband and I won’t be looking for a different hotel, I am already looking forward to returning here.….

This hotel had a modern design which lacked any real atmosphere and was incredibly noisy due to its location. The staff were lovely and the room was cleaned to a high standard every day, although the deluxe room was quite small and not worth the price. Breakfast wasn't great either, so I'd suggest exploring the local coffee and pastry shops instead.
