Hotel 1898
About
Historical atmosphere and harmony
On the city centre (the Ramblas) Hotel 1898 is another of our favorite hotel in Barcelona. 1898 was known as the Palace of the Marquess of Comillas. From this glorious past it kept a rich historical atmosphere and harmony. We love its sunny terrace with pool, large rooms, a restaurant by chef Carles Boronat, a beautiful spa. No hesitation..
Plaza Catalunya is just 200 metres from 1898 Hotel. Guests can also walk to the Gothic Quarter with its cathedral in 10 minutes.169 Rooms!

Our honeymoon experience at this hotel was located in the heart of Barcelona and within walking distance of the bustling La Rambla. Thanks to its central location, we were able to fully immerse ourselves in the city's charm and lively atmosphere. The complimentary champagne, birthday celebration, and excellent spa amenities made our romantic retreat even more special.
During our stay in Barcelona, my friend and I had the pleasure of staying at a wonderful hotel. The staff at the reception desk were extremely helpful with all of our needs and made us feel incredibly welcome. The hotel was conveniently located near the cathedral and just steps away from the bustling Las Ramblas. The overall atmosphere of the hotel was lovely and we had a great experience.
What a marvelous experience we had in a stunning and roomy Junior Suite located on the top floor. Our reservation was made months in advance directly through the hotel's website, and it was certainly worth it. This room was definitely one of the best we've stayed in over the years, boasting a 5-star quality that surpassed the hotel's own 4-star designation. The lighting arrangement, complete with pre-programmed dimming options, was simply enchanting. The personnel at the front desk were incredibly friendly as well. Despite our early arrival post-cruise at 9 AM, we were given immediate access to our room instead of being asked to store our luggage until check-in time. This was a pleasant surprise and greatly appreciated. As if that wasn't enough, on the evening of our special occasion, we were greeted in our room with a lovely spread of Cava, sweets, and well wishes. It was truly a WOW moment. This hotel is a fantastic place to stay, located right on the Ramblas, yet free from the expected noise and chaos. We will undoubtedly be returning.
I have had the pleasure of staying at this hotel on multiple occasions and it has consistently exceeded our expectations. The location is unbeatable, situated in the heart of Barcelona, just steps away from the iconic Rambles and a short stroll from Plaça de Catalunya and the Aerobus stop. The convenience of a €12 round-trip fare to the airport makes it a much more affordable option compared to taking a taxi.
Unfortunately, during this particular visit, the rooftop terrace was closed for renovations. However, this did not hinder our stay in any way. The hotel has implemented a convenient booking system for their spa, which made our experience even more enjoyable. We opted for the half-board package this time and were not disappointed - breakfast was exceptional and the three-course dinner left us feeling fully satisfied.
The hotel maintains an immaculate standard and the rooms are exceptional. The staff are always friendly and attentive, which made our stay even more enjoyable. We are already looking forward to returning in 2024.
The hotel has recently undergone renovations, but I cannot recommend it. The lobby is visually appealing, but they have neglected to include important amenities that travelers expect. As a solo traveler, I did not feel secure as there was no deadbolt on the doors and the balcony in my deluxe room did not have a lock. I also had trouble charging my phone as there were no outlets near the bed. On a less important note, the king size bed I paid for was actually just two twin beds pushed together, even though I had requested a king. Breakfast was available at an additional cost and was of decent quality, but overpriced. However, the final straw was during checkout when I was unexpectedly charged for undisclosed taxes that were supposed to be included in the prepaid amount. This had never happened to me during my previous stays in Barcelona and felt deceitful. Overall, I would not choose to stay here again on my next trip, especially since it is located on La Ramblas.
